Biographical Note
Barbara "Bobbie" Auld (née Nuite) was born January 11, 1931 to Charles W. and Ella Clarke Nuite in Augusta, Georgia. A graduate of Aiken High School and Furman University (1951), Bobbie had a decades long career at the Medical University of South Carolina. After retiring, she began recording church services, church choirs, and musical groups rooted in the African American spiritual and gospel tradition. When asked why she decided to spend the early years of her retirement recording, she would credit attending a Christmas service at Olive Branch AME Church in the 1980s with Louise Manigualt White, her family's nanny of 37 years, as sparking her interest in recording religious performances and services. She relocated from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 2002 to be closer to family and passed away in 2020.

Abstract
The Bobbie Auld audio collection, bulk: 1981-1998 (1955-2015), contains 128 audiocassettes and 1 CD containing audio recordings of church services, church choirs, and musical groups held and performed throughout the South Carolina Lowcountry (mainly Charleston and Berkeley Counties). Within the audio recordings of church services and events, African Methodist Episcopal (AME) churches are the majority, but other denominations including Baptist, Reformed Episcopal, and Presbyterian churches are also included. The Brotherhood Gospel Singers are the majority of audio recordings among the musical groups and choirs.

The Bobbie Auld audio collection is arranged in seven series. The audio recordings are loosely arranged, first, by alphabetical order, then chronological order. The oral history interviews are arranged alphabetically by last name.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donations were made by Bobbie Auld in the 1990s, 2001, and 2015.
Separated Materials
Two student papers, "I Want to Shout! An Analysis of African American Religious Music in the Antebellum South from 1820 to 1860" by Matthew B. Chandler (1997) and "Evolution of Negro Spirituals" by Anne King (1957), have been separated from this collection and rehoused in Avery's Ready Reference collection under "Music: Spirituals" due to their unknown provenance.
Processing Information
The Auld audio collection was originally processed in 1996. A 2001 accrual to the collection was interfiled within the existing collection around the time of donation.
Collection reprocessed with the addition of the 2015 accrual by Nate Hubler. Funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supported the processing of this collection and the creation of this finding aid.
During reprocessing, audiocassette item numbers as well as the general arrangement of the collection were maintained from the original processing. Two changes were made to the arrangement from its original processing. Programs, handwritten notes, and newspaper clippings documenting audio recordings within the collection were moved from Series 1: Paper Documents and arranged alongside the actual recordings. Audio recordings of stories, presentations, comedy routines, and general conversations were moved from Series 4: Oral History Interviews to Series 7: Other Music and Recordings.
