Abstract Eugene Blakely Sloan (1922-1969) was born in Clinton, South Carolina on February 22, 1922 to Janie Pressley Lindsay and Eugene Blakely Sloan. He attended Erskine College where he majored in history and served in the United State Army during World War II. Sloan was a writer, editor, photographer and award-winning journalist for The State newspaper and notable for his coverage of key moments of the civil rights era in South Carolina.
